The Centre of Hope offers a variety of programs to individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Daily drop-in programs provide laundry and shower facilities, nourishment, breakfast programs, personal hygiene items, assistance with applications, appointments, and referrals to other community resources. The Centre of Hope is a participant in Alberta’s 10-year Plan to end homelessness through the Housing First Program. They work with the individual to set goals to maintain housing, employment, and re-integrate into the community as well as support for Permanent Supportive Housing and Eviction Prevention. There are emergency accommodations for those in need. This includes 56 emergency shelter beds and 35 emergency mats for those who are homeless. Available for both Women and Men. A soup kitchen is offered at the Salvation Army on Saturday, Sunday, and Statutory holidays. 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. They will also serve a second meal from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The Family and Community Services Department will help to provide low-income seniors with resources such as financial help with prescriptions and free clothing from their thrift store. An application for need will be filled out and assessed by Carolanne and Florence. |

The Outreach team typically travels with one Outreach Counsellor and one Outreach Support Worker. All of our services are free of charge and available for any resident of the RMWB.

Waypoints offers various programs and services to those dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse and homelessness. Next Steps Program: Provides women who are currently in shelter with risk assessments for violence, safety planning, advocacy (court or agency), goal setting and support. Emergency Shelter: Unity House, is an Emergency Women’s and Children’s shelter. It can be accessed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week by women with or without children. Waypoints maintains a 36-bed shelter and provides emergency, temporary accommodations for a period of 21 days. New Beginnings Program: A closed support group for women who are in an abusive relationship and/or who have left an abusive relationship and are starting over. The focus of the program is to explore personal history and relationships. This is to help clients understand the origins of relationship problems and to set concrete goals for growth and improvement. |

For Seniors under the age of 65 and do not qualify for Senior Housing units various other affordable housing programs are options. Affordable Housing: Affordable rental housing is priced 10% below Market rates. There are a variety of housing options from a junior 1-bedroom to 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom apartments and townhouses. Seniors receive a further 10% discount of the listed rental rates. All properties are located close to Services, amenities and bus routes. They are pet friendly and part of the crime free multi-housing program. Social Housing: As a provincially designated Housing Management Body, WBH managers all social housing in Wood Buffalo on behalf of the government of Alberta. Social housing is provided to qualifying individuals at rates tied to income, usually 30% of your total income, which ensures housing costs do not deplete earnings.

WBH provides housing to seniors in Fort McMurray at Rotary House, Legion Manor, and Araubasca House. Assistance is provided to seniors 65+. You must have been a resident of the Region of Wood Buffalo for a minimum of three months before applying. Rent will be based on 30% of your income. If renting at Legion Manor or Araubasca House, there is a $50 per month charge for the cost of utilities. Legion Manor and Araubasca House: These 30 self-contained units are individual, one-bedroom apartments. These are deficit-funded by the provincial government. Rotary House Lodge: Independent living with some supports (bathing, dressing, and medical reminders) provided by home care if the resident is a home care client. Rotary House also provides meals, snacks, weekly light housekeeping and in-house recreation as part of the residents $515 (per person) monthly service fee. Personal laundry service is available if the resident would like and that fee is $40. This is funded through municipal requisitions. |
Hours of Operation
“Books by Mail” offers residents an opportunity to order books, DVDs, and CDs and have them shipped directly to Fort Chipewyan. Memberships are free. Items will be delivered to the Fort Chipewyan Municipal Office and held for 7 days after you have received notification that it has arrived. Items can be kept for six weeks, and returned to the Municipal Office. |
