Shaping community: advocacy through action

Connecting community while championing seniors is at the heart of our mission. We work with local agencies to deliver high quality services and supports to adults  60+ who face age related challenges. Our efforts not only meet immediate needs but also strengthen local capacity and inter agency relationships. By fostering an inclusive environment, we equip our region with the skills and resources needed to enhance seniors’ safety, security, and social inclusion.

Creating impactful, system level change is the foundation of our advocacy—and of social justice work. Because seniors’ needs cross health, housing, community service, and governmental boundaries, our team engages on multiple fronts, providing education and raising awareness wherever decisions are made. Staff members represent St. Aidan’s Society and local seniors on numerous committees and boards, leveraging that involvement to influence meaningful change.

Arts in action

In partnership with Arts  Council  Wood  Buffalo, we co‑create arts programming with seniors and Elders across the region. These initiatives—planned with older adults—highlight their valuable contributions, foster connections with the wider community, and bring seniors and artists together to share knowledge, skills, and experience.

Age sensitivity training

Four times a year, and in collaboration with FuseSocial, we deliver an engaging, interactive Age Sensitivity Training through the FuseSocial Academic Calendar. Tailored for diverse organizations and age groups, the workshop builds empathy by exploring the aging process and seniors’ day to day realities—promoting respect, inclusion, and clearer cross generational communication.

Age-friendly communities

Since 1973, St. Aidan’s Society has been serving our region and advocating for its citizens. We are proud to contribute to an exciting initiative: working towards establishing Fort McMurray as an Age-Friendly Community, following the standards set by the World Health Organization.

An age-friendly community empowers seniors to live fuller, healthier, and more active lives. It helps prevent the neglect and abuse of older adults, enhancing their safety and wellbeing. An age-friendly community fosters inclusion, combats ageism, and offers equal opportunities for participation in community life.

Elder abuse

Our elder‑abuse education and awareness program protects older adults’ well‑being, dignity, and safety through education, intervention, and community support. We raise public awareness of abuse—physical, emotional, financial, or neglect—via workshops, presentations, campaigns, and partnerships with healthcare providers, law enforcement, and community organizations. By equipping older adults, caregivers, and the broader public with knowledge and tools, we aim to prevent abuse and uphold respect for seniors in every living environment.

Direct support is also available through our Outreach Program.

See additional resources on our Elder Abuse Resources page.

The Tomorrow Project brings together senior-focused service providers to better support the diverse needs of older adults. This collaborative effort looks at what’s working, where the gaps are, and how we can work smarter—not harder—to make services more accessible and efficient. Guided by the understanding that social factors impact 75% of health outcomes, the project aims to reduce overlap, improve coordination, and ensure seniors can easily find the help they need. It takes a respectful, culturally aware approach that honors the unique experiences and backgrounds of each person.

By assessing the strengths and capacity of participating organizations, the project is building a clear, practical plan to improve quality of life for seniors. It’s all about working together—sharing knowledge, respecting limits, and creating a strong, connected network that meets seniors where they are.
